I have a customer that wants me to extend his deck out into the middle of some oak trees, but I haven't a clue on how to draw an oak tree in sketchup. I have pics from various angles and dimensions etc. but mother nature doesn't grow in straight lines. Any clues to get started?

With a tree that is so intricate, I would suggest using match photo feature to add your extension into the existing photo. Then you can just delete parts of the extension so the tree pokes through.

If you must model the tree accurately then I would suggest modeling only in quads/tris and then use Artisan plugin.

Good luck, I have made full 3D forked (split stem) trees in SU and they take HOURS. It is possible though. WIth this project though, I would definitely use photo match.

Well it took a couple of hours but this is what I came up with. I didn't go past what I needed as far the the trunks were concrened. I'll work on it some more to flesh it out, but I'm happy at this piont.

Good! That works fine for demonstrating the project.

If you use ThruPaint or some other texturing plugin (or labor long with the native tools) you could get an even texture on the trees. As commonly happens the bark image is fractured over the different faces. Please see the two trunks in the center. I changed their texturing with ThruPaint and on the larger trunk I added a new texture.

Good luck. Your friend will be pleased and thanks for not cutting down the Oaks.
