I am a beginner to Sketchup and I am currently learning how to make windows, however, you need to select the edges of a square once you've deleted the face in order to make the window. But I can't manage to select just the edges of that window and not everything else. Have tried shift+clicking but it doesn't seem to work, nor does zooming right in. I think its more difficult to select the horizontal lines rather than the vertical.
Can anyone save me from these early time wasting troubles??

When you need to select the edges of a square, simply doubleclick on the face of the square: this selects the face AND the border edges. Now you shift click on the face to exclude it from the selection 😉

You should also read through this help site, there are many tips.

If you need to go further, Thomthoms selection toys do a great job here too.

If you often need to select difficult pathes, you should have a look at Dales SketchUV ($), which has a "Path select tool"

            Hi Helen, hi folks.

Broomstick gave you one very good and quick way of doing the selection of the perimeter of a face but, as you stated it, you have deleted the face.

I would suggest not deleting the face first. Keep this as the last operation.

            Just ideas.

I find when making windows that it is easier, inside the window component to keep the "raw" edges of the cutting rectangle or shape , then all the other parts of the window are also components. It helps in keeping the window "cutting" and work on the parts of the window later on. At the start this rectangle of edges might be a part of the window pieces, but I separate it out.
