Creating a model starting with a Exterior Elevation CAD file
-
**I have an exterior elevation CAD file that I would like to model in Sketchup Pro. I know how to import the CAD file but not sure how to create the model from the 2D Exterior Elevation drawing.
I could start with the floorplan and build the walls, adding the roof, etc.... But thought there might be an easy way or feature to start with the exterior elevation file?
Thanks.**

I've tried a few things in this direction. It only goes so far and depends on the complexity of your building. You do need a footprint plan at least. You can set up the elevations on the sides and draw, for example trace a rectangle over the window. Push pull that out to the massing model based on the foot print. Project the roof lines etc. Extrude a detail traced from the elevation. You might even make a profile and extrude it for a wing of the house, but as I say, it only goes so far. I find it easier to draw the model based on my knowledge of the building and using the CAD as an aid to that--or using building plugins.

It also depends on the accuracy of the original 2D draughter. I'm working on a scheme where the elevations and the plans are slightly different. I've opted to work from the floor plan as the most reliable projection especially with the curved on plan wall sections!

For those after me, the first has audio, and the Robyn Shrestha series is detailed but no audio.
