Now that Blender has its own GPU path tracer (Cycles) and after seeing recent work by Michalis and the new short "Tears of Steel", I've finally decided to seriously learn Blender. My goal is to be able to create Architectural animations in it. This thread will document this journey. So far, I have downloaded the latest release and installed it. I see a viewport with a small cube in the middle, and I decide to poke around to see what happens.

      To be continued...

I wish you good luck on this. I may still have a file or two around here of a bullfrog, plastic toy wolf, and a gingerbread man. Say hello to Suzanne(?) for me.(that's the monkey head primitive). Blender has come a long way since v2.45.

I take the slow, deliberate approach in my aimless wandering.

Yes, good luck! Don't forget to download the keyboard shortcut guide from here http://www.blenderguru.com/blog/ I have it printed, and you'll need it. Start with some tutorials, before you jump right into it, it will be confusing, with the clicks and cursor.
Here are some places where you can find good tutorials for getting you started:

            Hi Miguel,

I take a ticket for this journey too. 😎
May be here and there we will help together..

I'm going to stay aware with this thread.

            ++ Simon.

                My first " n'importe quoi " with Blender. I have called it "ArchitecturalMistake_000.blend" 😉

                and rotated:

Don't know why, as I have already forgotten the shortcuts I learned yesturday 🤣 , I believe in it 😄 ☀

Thank you Pilou for the link (and for your encouragements 😆 ). We have probably to open a specific thread for Blender links into the French section..

I remembered this open course from Tufts. I wonder if there is a more current one or how well it travels to the current version.

                    mptak:
Neal Hirsig, of Tufts University has created a full set of Blender videos at gryllus.net
I believe this is still active. He goes through most if not all of the application in these videos. I recommend it. That site has been mentioned before in this forum several times.
PS I have not checked the site in some time, but it is likely that he has updated some of the videos for the later versions.
I once asked and received his permission to mention his site in the Blender forum.

Its downright embarrassing for me as a SU user to watch videos on You Tube. Where very well meaning users of software other than SU show me how to draw a simple 3d architectural house. The last example I watched was someone using C4D. The video was an hr. in length. I sat down and did the same project with more detail in under 12 minutes, using SU.

Here is my reasoning where the extra time is spent: I'll chose a simple Cube primitive as an example.

                      1. the ground plane does nothing except tell tell one where I am in 3d space.
                      2. in order to move a simple cube from its centroid 0,0,0 position, you must take note of its co-ordinates to move it up by y/2 to sit on the ground plane.
                      3. there is no 3d snapping one cube to the another cube or other 3d object. or snapping
a cube to a particular location on predefined ground plane grid.

Your forever using the orthographic views, just to correctly position simple objects.

However there are many things SU can't do. Hence learning Blender is a must! Unless you have can afford to buy any of its main competitors.

                      my 2 cents!

                        Hi, tomot:
I have to agree with you on principle, as you enumerated.

Haha, that's why my workflow with Blender involves doing all the modeling in SU and exporting (with TIG's excellent obj exporter) into Blender. Saves a lot of headache trying to actually model in Blender 😄

Yes, rendering has come a very long way in Blender, but I don't imagine any of the building was modeled in Blender.

Lynda.com has some blender tutorials available. I've tried learning it several times now. Just can't seem to wrap my head around that program.

Blender did have its own wiki at one time. I remember the gingerbread man.
