I recently bought a new computer and have managed to get it home from the office earlier today. I plugged it into my router via Ethernet and was using it without a problem for around 5 hours.

Around 6 hours ago the internet suddenly cease to work. The router is working via wifi as I have several other devices and laptops using it. I have also swapped over the Ethernet cables three times as well as different sockets on the back of the box.

On my Network connections panel in Windows 8 it says I am connected to the Internet. When I troubleshoot problems it says everything is fine.

None of my apps, mail, browsers calendars etc will connect to the internet. I have tried to reset renew via the command line with ipconfig /renew etc but no luck.

If anybody could help I am a novice when it comes to PC. here is a brief list of whats what...

      • Machine is using 64bit Windows 8* Internet was working fine via Ethernet earlier today* Internet is still working via wifi and ethernet (tested on iMac)* Have disabled Firewalls and security software but no luck (Bull Guard Internet Security) * I have also tried to reset all of the DNS and Internet settings

      Thanks in advance

      Liam

Try unplugging your router from power temporarily and allow it to reboot. If that works, I have an idea what it may be.

Can you ping anything from your computer using the command line?

I had done this before but have just done it again for longer and no change. The wifi is back on ( On a MB Air now ) but the W8 machine via Ethernet is still not letting me onto the web even though its saying I am connected to the network in the toolbar.

          Yes I have Ping google.com & Ping 209.183.226.152.

Both are responding with average 14ms and 86ms respectively.

Did win8 update a driver for it?

            Try System restore

Its possible I allowed an update while i still had a connection, I have been installing so much stuff today I could have clicked anything. I had installed over 600GB of data from the web and various media drives before I lost connection.

If I system restore does that mean to reload the OS loosing all of my data etc?

I havent created any restore points either its only been on around 20 hours.

I am going to install W7 64bit on the HDD and see what happens and if that OS lets me connect. Fingers crossed.

Since I already have data on the HDD can I create a partition without deleting data?

Sorry, I knew it was stupid but so many people don't do it.

It could well have been the update.
Update normally makes a restore point itself so you could try going back to that.
It doesn't reinstall the OS, just goes back to a certain point. Anything you have done after that would technically be gone.

Wish it was a simple fix. Last time I had that issue was on a W7 system. It was being petty because I hadn't told it if I was on a work/public/home network, so it cut me off. I don't think that would be your issue seeing as it was working and then quit. I wouldn't suspect a driver because you are able to ping other computers, but who knows.

yes I am on the internet now via wifi. I think its something I must have done so I am going to wipe the entire machine purging it of W8 and then install W7.

I understand that is not the first choice, but it's a great move. I have had several people complain about W8 "bricking" their computer or some part of it, then after installing W7 in the same system everything works perfectly.

Why Microsoft does this is beyond me. Every other OS is junk... 95/SE, great! 2000/ME, junk! XP, great! Vista, pretty, but trouble. Win 7, finest MS OS to date. W8, right into the bin.

                                  Completely predictable, but why?

Does that machine show up on your network? say from your laptop, when you map your network does it show the new machine on it? it may just not be connecting to the internet but still working on the network, that will mean the hardware is fine but something funky with software.

                                          Yes thats what I thought.

Anyway I just took a trip to PC world and bought a USB network adaptor for £40. Everything is working fine now, just the mammoth task of installing all updates and drivers for the gazillion parts I have.

I spoke to Ioannis and it seems I can quite easily transfer my license from my Mac to PC. Hopefully will try something later on Thea.

That's officially the first time I have ever heard of a NIC failure. Congrats on getting it sorted. Maybe eventually you can get an internal PCI slot NIC instead of the USB, your speeds will be much better. I have a stack here, but it would cost more to send you one than it would to buy one locally.
