Scroll wheel zoom stopped working on mac

i've been using SU for 3 months on an older iMac and occasionally the scroll wheel stops zooming. it usually started to work again, but now it's stuck. ideas?

had that this week,
had to hover over an object to get scroll zoom to work, it's back to normal now.
