Advent Candle Stand or Floor Lamp
-
Nice, Dave. Might you want more of a drip catcher on the arms? We used to have the candles on the table, with a wreath. This was one of my favorite traditions as a child. Thinking back it seems it must been picked up from the Menorah tradition.
-
Thank you. I think the candles will be oil-filled so they shouldn't drip. If they aren't going to use oil-filled candles I'll probably make some drip catchers out of brass.

Dave,
Nice looking piece, but your method for joining the vertical pieces has me puzzled. How about adding another view to show the joinery?
Best,

Hi David,
Thank you.
I don't have the model at my disposal at the moment so I made a quick sketch showing the joint.

You cut this with a dovetail cutter in the router table. Each piece gets a pass with the edge of the board against the fence and then with a face. all four pieces are identical. When I made the table lamp I spent quite a bit of time making test cuts. With SketchUp, it's dead easy by using copies of a component arrayed around the center.

Very clever, as always.

I wish it was my idea. It is pretty cool. Much like the birdsmouth method used to make hollow masts and spars for sailboats.

Here's the floor lamp with a mica shade. I added a couple of Morris chairs and Gregory Paolini's Limbert-style coffee table for scale.

-
Very nice Dave. I've always like the Arts and Craft furniture.
-
Thank you, Walt. Now I just have to get the mica and get moving on it. If I'm going to make one I might as well do two and the shades should come first.

FWIW, I've simplified it to use simple rabbets for joining the vertical pieces. It should be less fussy to cut those joints.
