Creating an independant area

Hi
I've been using Sketchup for the first time in the last 10 hours. I just bought an apartment and want to do remodel and use sketchup to build the model of the apartment. Everything been great but there is an area on the top left of my design that I can't make it as an independent area from the walls. I try to draw the area with lines and rectangle but it still is created as part of the walls and not an independant area. If I click on that area all walls are selected. Any ideas?

Excuse us but how would we know what's in the "top left" of your design? If a picture is worth a thousand words, a model file (attached to your post) is worth a million.

Groups and components are ways to separate entities from the adjacent ones.
