Really cool looking beasts, but I have one question - with the engines angled out like that wouldn't they waste a lot of their energy pushing towards each other rather than just pushing forward?

The engines all rotate in sockets. On a straight they would be pointing back but this 'shot' is taken on a corner so you can imagine the engines wildly swiveling.
The Red Bull car is actually a mistake, one thruster is pointing back but the other isn't (left side). I will change this in the next illustration.
