I am looking for a script to explode all components and sub components of a selected item. The closest thing I've found is bomb, which explodes the entire model. That goes a little too far; I only want to explode a selected item. A bonus feature would be to delete all non-exterior geometry and new layers, if possible.

The reason I want this is mainly for imported components from the 3D warehouse. For example, If I am building a house and want to put a washing machine in it, I will import a generic one already made rather than build one from scratch. I only need the shell of that washer for visual reference and measuring. I am not interested in the agitator, internal wiring, etc. cluttering up my components list. Also many things I import have multiple layers that I then have to manually delete as well.

What I want is to be able to import an item, have it reduced to only the exterior visible surfaces, and all the extra parts, layers, and subcomponents removed to keep SU from having to render useless detail.

Does anyone know of such a thing? I suppose I could download the item instead of importing straight from the warehouse, then use bomb, then purge the layers, materials, and components lists, then import. But to me that defeats the idea of having the integrated warehouse.

Problem here is that's this is a subjective task which is very easy for a human - thought perhaps time consuming - but much harder to do with a script. You'd have a way to figure out what each face represent and evaluate if it's important or not. And considering how many warehouse models are quite messy with facenormals facing any direction it makes the process a whole lot difficult.
