Physical models, anyone still make them?
-
Putting feelers out, I need to know if anyone still makes them and if they do what does one charge?
Got a client that wants a 3d model, renders as well as a physical balsa wood/cardboard model.

What is a physical model? Sorry I don't think I've heard the term.

I believe Phil Rader, member here, does. I'll PM you his email address.

hi solo,
People do still make 'scratch' or 'scale' models for theatre, film, television and exhibition work, as well as for hobbies like train sets.
Cost varies massively dependant on end use and size.
Best thing is to find a local company and talk to them.
this is one I found in the Dallas area http://www.modelmakers.me/?gclid=COGA3azb0rECFQRTfAodDCAAbQ

If you are thinking of outsourcing here is a link to a Vancouver company that operates world wide.
They will quote for free as well. Really fine craftwork.http://www.opengatescalemodel.com/service.html
How complex is the model? Is 3D printing out of the question? -
Pete I do make physical models they are time consuming but really worth it for the clients.
It's hard to quote a cost not knowing the scope and detail of the model. Shoot me an email and I can help you gauge the amount of cost/hours to make one.

Pete,
I used to make physical models back in architecture school for small architectural firms. It helped pay for many of my own school models and books. You might want to contact a university near you that has an Architecture or Interior Design program and find out if any students would be willing to moonlight for you.Not sure what the going rate these days is, but I used to charge hourly with the agreement that I get to keep the scraps. I provided the client will all the receipts and packaging so they knew that I didn't buy more than was needed and had them buy the materials for me.
Good luck.

You could always print depending on what the model is/size/cost.
I had somebody build something for me but its so time consuming, paying them was only just cheaper than having it printed!
