This site looks a lot smaller in scope and scale than your examples, and I had to dig hard as it was done in 2009, but I would love to see how others handle massing, even on an intermediate scale.
So here is one of a marina development,(still in zoning amendment process) modeled in Skp, and I can't remember if it was rendered Kerkythea, or if it was the real early days of Thea Clay.
The houseboat view has PP in Photoshop.

You might look at mrdcon's (member) website - has some town planning studies on it.

I tend to love the look of faux hand crafted timber models.

                    Hi Solo

Not quite sure just what level of finish you are looking for but here are a few shots that might get the vital juices going.

                    Hope this helps a bit.

Some work, some are rendered, others are sketchup.

i looked up the link in this post and i really like the palm trees he used...can someone tell me how he did them? i would say they are made in photoshop? on the other hand somehow it looks rendered (judging by the 3d'ish optic and the shadows)

Those are speed tree models - "real" 3D although behave in a level of detail mode. Part of the Lumion rendering application 3D library.
