Penguin Donkey

I came across this piece of furniture while reading a woodworking forum. It's a small side table from the 1930s. It was designed specifically to hold paperback books published by Penguin. It was referred to as a "Penguin donkey" because the boxes look like panniers such as were used on the pack animals. This is actually the Mark II version. The first used bent plywood for the cases.
Another guy was looking for plans so he could build one. With a bit of research I was able to get dimensions taken from an original one to create this model.
I need to get some books to put in it.

Great views, Dave. I see you extended the "shelf" between the panniers. Nice rendition of the HM chairs, too. I can tell you those are very comfortable.

You're right about the center shelf.
I was just thinking about the donkeys. The original--and the model as currently drawn--is about 15 inches tall. I think if I were to build them now, I would probably scale them up to 18 or 20 inches tall.

These bring back memories of art school, (over 30 years ago!) We had what we called 'donkies' in the art studios - to work at or just to use as benches. I serched for 'artist donkey' yesterday - but none were as robust as those old college ones. Very comfortable to work at & there was a trough at the front for pens, etc. Here's my best recollection of them.
