Imported 3D file - extracting layers
-
Guys, attached is a skippy of some walls prduced in Spirit http://www.softtech.com/
Spirit is a 2D / 3D cad program that offers native SU output however the resulting model shows faces on imported layers but the edges are on Layer0...
I'm just wondering if there is a way once converted to SU to select and 'group' geometry to the imported layer name?

This file only has ungrouped geometry and beside that wall layer, an empty layer 1. I would say put all geometry on layer 0 then group and put the group on layer wall but I am sure you are facing with more complex models. Are there any with more (used) layers and even groups? If there are no groups but different layers, what happens with shared faces?

Thanks Csaba, yes this is only a test export to show how Spirit exports to SU with faces on it's own layer and edges on 0. I guess I could select face then select all on same layer then group which will take edges but you're right what happens to shared faces and also the complexity of a big model?????

If you turn edges off in styles, you can select only the faces with a selection box (or select all on the same layer). Change the active layer and group them. They will create their own edges inside the groups. Now turn bare edges back off, select all and delete them.
It all depends how groups and all come through however. If there are groups, you can default all loose geometry to layer0 with this plugin and only keep groups on other layers.

Also great trouble shooting and mess clean-up plugin (best used on others' screwed up models and then tell them it took 5 hours at $50/h)

yeah a good plugin Csaba but when I want to group geometry as per the layer they reside on in Spirit is a bit more of an effort....

Why?

Some files might have 50 to 100 layers so selecting entities on each layer and grouping them 100 times is what's timing consuming!!

I was not aware of Spirit until your post. Very interesting. Did not see license pricing?

It is a very flexible piece of AEC software, Tim. I'm not suprised that you can't find anything on the web; I have for a number of years been crowing about this!!!
The technical director of Spirit International lives in New Hampshire, USA actually so I can put you in contact with him if you want.

I did look at the website. I just did not have time to look at a reseller site. What I did see was a nice presentation on a database driven BIM oriented program, supportive of Sketchup.

Thats one of its big selling points...
