Exporting to DWG or DXF

I am increasingly being asked by building consultants to provide 2D DWG plan files for cross-discipline design. What would be ideal would be when exporting a section slice from a model, the resulting geometry is grouped and located on the layer it was cut from.
That aside, how do you guys extract particial data like this?

I am not sure if any of these is what you seek, and I have a feeling you already did this, but I just clicked on Plugins Index, and the collection at the top of the page had DXF Export by joeberger. I then did a windows Edit>Find(on this page), typed in "export" and stepped through about six or eight plugin topics with that word. On the other hand, perhaps the receivers of your output could find a tool to import skp's as dwg's or dxf's. -
Unfortunately the native 2D DWG exporter doesn't respect the original layers in the model, and the only possible differentiation is between edges, profiles and section cut edges. It is npot very important for me, as my models are small and mostly represent building details, and I usually clean them up manually in AutoCad. The only way to export layers would be to export one layer at a time with all the SU export layer options turned off (export to layer 0) and then re-combine the layers in AutoCad. The export part could maybe be automated in Ruby, but of course if you have tens of layers it is still quite a chore. Maybe running a "flatten" script, and then outputting a 3D file might do the trick in some cases, too

Yes mitcorb - I have been thru the DWG plugins but none do what i'm looking for.... I've even tried the export to DWG from Lauyout but gee that's a mess!!!
Anssi, that sounds like a good suggestion; maybe isolate required gometry and flatten the model then export..... will try this.

Is it me or has it gotten unpredictable to export to autocad? When I export to cad I am always noticing missing pieces, especially with sections. What you see on the screen should be what you get.
