I'm sure this question has been asked a million times before but every time I search .3DS or any variant, nothing comes up.

Is it possible to export a 3DS file with the vertices in tack? Only the faces are being exported.
I have Google Sketchup 8 pro.

        Hi Bill,

Under the 3ds export options, you have the possibility to either preserve texture co-ordinates or weld vertices. I guess this is the one you are looking for - although sacrificing co-ordinates may be a big price.

Wow, I looked everywhere for that options button.

I read that but I still couldn't find the options button. Thanks for the speedy response.

And do not export standalone edges (I do not know why that is checked by default - last time I exported to 3DS was some 4.5-5 years ago almost - from SU6 - so I definitely did not check it in SU8)

While you're here, is there a simple way to place an object's center around the origin?

Well, if you can mark that center with something, you can select the object (preferably a group/component), activate the move tool, "grab" this center geometry and move the selected object to the center by typing [0,0,0] (on an English system) then pressing Enter.

Here is a plugin that will add a guide point to the center of your selected object(s):

What about the file structure for a sketch up file, has that been documented yet? Right now I'm working on a 3D engine in Java. I'm using 3DS because it's really basic to decode. I would love to skip over all this exporting and simply load a sketchup file.

I have no idea about these things - I am just the guy who says hello here at the door. Best is to go down on the forum index and post in the developers forum. All the witchcraft is going on there.
