SketchUp - document / file management workflows....
-
Hi there
Just wondering if anyone might like to share some tips on how they deal with file and document organization.
I realise that this is very much a personal / user-specific kind of question..... We no doubt all use SU for different things (and in different ways) but nevertheless, I can't help but imagine that there must still be a lot of crossover in terms of how people deal with their files and folders. At the end of the day, we all need to be able to 'find our stuff' and no doubt there are some very skilful and experienced users here who people (ie. novice users) like myself could learn a lot from!
I am particularly interested in hearing how people deal with and organize the following:
- SU directories and folder structure:
Where do you keep stuff (and how did you decide on this shema?)
How do you categorize and decide what goes where?
Do you have a central repository or keep things under project directories?
How 'granular' do you get with your file naming and content organization?
How do you organize your 'imported' items such as furniture or objects from Google Warehouse etc.? (more specifically, do you tend to rename them to suit your current conventions and if so, how is this working out?)- File naming conventions / schemes:
Do you have a system for naming files and folders?
Do you use any kind of versioning control or 'parent.child' naming conventions?
What do you do when faced with very complex models which might contain many 'sub-components' or nested models etc?)- For people who work more on mechanical and/or more complex models:
Do you structure your content differently to suit the complexity of your model?
Do you find it better to keep all your 'generic' SU content in a centralised directory and then create project-specific directories (folders etc.) or is there a better way?
Do you use any system to help prevent your working models from becoming too "cluttered"? (I have read many posts on this topic: use of SU layers etc. however I still find I tend to keep 'copying and pasting' various model assemblies as I make or test small changes - I guess I do this in an attempt to be able to 'go backwards' in case something has gone wrong) I have no doubt there are much better workflows!?- For people who use VRay:
How do you integrate your file / folder management scheme between SU and VRay? (assuming it isn't the same for both)
Any advice on setting up directories for vismats and visopts etc.?
How do you structure your project-specific items (materials / textures etc.) and keep these integrated within your overall VRay content?Sorry for the long post.....just trying to be as specific as I can. Would be happy to clarify any of this if something isn't clear.
Thanks very much in anticipation of some great suggestions!
Cheers
Mike
