Keyboard Shortcuts
-
Hi Guys
I have searched through a good part of SketchUcation's web site, looking for the answer to my query but I cannot see it anywhere.
At the risk of being labelled a "Troglodyte" I kindly request that someone will advise how to create a keyboard shortcut. I tend to use "Hide" and then later "Unhide" when I am working on a model. Hide is not a problem, (right click on mouse). But Unhide, (go to Edit Menu etc.) is a real nuisance.
I use windows 7 64 bit and S U 8.Incidentally, I wish to congratulate all the contributors to the forums etc. Without you guys and your invaluable and selfless efforts to assist less informed S U users, I'm not sure where I, for one, would be. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks.

Hi Roger,
Under Window > Preferences > Shortcuts you can assign different shortcuts to commands. Note however that some are context sensitive (i.e. if you hide something inside a group and later exit the group, you cannot use "Unhide last" outside the group's editing context). Also this means that some shortcuts will only appear in the list when you (say) select something first.

Hi Gaieus
I have looked at preferences. "Hide" is listed but not "Unhide"! Does this mean I cannot create a shortcut?
Cheers, Roger -
There needs to be something in your model that could be unhid so that the Unhide command is actually available. To make this easy, hide something in a model while View>Hidden Geometry is turned on. The hidden thing will be visible as a sort of mesh. Select it and then go to Preferences>Shortcuts and set your keyboard shortcut.

Got it. Thanks for that. -
Any time. There are a number of commands--mainly in the Context menu--that won't show in the Shortcuts list unless you have selected something in SketchUp for which that command is useful. In addition to your Hide/Unhide example, if you want to set keyboard shortcuts for the Flip Along>Component's ... commands, you need to have a component selected. There are actually nine different Flip commands and three different sorts of entities so that one takes a bit of set up.

On a Mac, the default for Hide is command-E. Unhide is command-shift-E. You can use the commands to hide an entire component or, if you have a component open for editing, you can hide a face. I use these shortcuts all the time.

If you like using shortcut keys...I have found adding a gaming keypad to my system helpful. These keypads have programmable keys that enable tool and/or procedures. The unit I use is a Razer Nostromo with 17 keys. Each key can be programmed with a shortcut or a macro (multiple key strokes). There is even 8 levels or layers for each key giving you 136 keys to program (although I find this overkill).
I programmed all my most common tools used in the drawing process. I memorized the key locations quite quickly. Keeping my left hand on the keypad and my right on the mouse, drawing speed has increased nicely. Just remember to do some finger/hand stretches. Carpal tunnel is always been a problem with CAD operators.
