Vray or IDX Renditioner
-
I don't use V-ray but AFAIK (apart from a time limited trial) there's no free version. IDX Renditioner doesn't have a fully working trial version but has a non limited (to time) free version with the only limitation in image size (640x480 - which is fairly enough for many websites for instance).
There are otrher renderers however that are free if you think. Note that some (like Renditioner or Podium) are very well integrated into SU itself and extremely easy to use while some other (mostly standalone) rendreres have a steeper learning curve.

Idx renditioner does have a free version, called 'Express'

I'll just correct two items from above regarding Renditioner. We have both a free version for unlimited use commercial or personal use, and a 30-day trial of the full version.
Besides the size of renders, 640x480 vs. 4096x4096, the full version has multithreading, so it can be much faster. The free version is only single threaded, but because it has smaller renders it isn't as important relatively.

I am a beginner at rendering, and while IDX is not perfect, it is high on my list of preferred renderers. Especially where price, ease of use, and integration with SU's features and materials are important.

From what I have seen here, VRay is the superior product in regards to quality of photo real render. As a need it yesterday Architect, I find Renditioner Pro, fast, easy, and adequate. Btw, I do not need to compete with SOM for work.
