Importing 3ds Files to SU - it crashes? Help

Hi
I have some furniture models that are in 3ds/obj format. They were obviously created in 3DS. Theyre mot overly complicated models, simple things like couches/chairs.
However everytime I import them into sketchup, it seems to be slow and it crashes!!
Any idea on what im doing wrong? Or is this just how it is?Im using SU8 and a very spec PC
