Ice Cream Swirl
-
I'm looking for a way to depict an ice cream swirl like that from a soft serve machine. I have seen the ice cream examples in the warehouse but am hoping this has been tackled by someone with better SketchUp skills than I have. Could a circle be used with "follow me" on an upward spiral center post? The circle would need to get progressively smaller as it "twirled" upward. Suggestions/solutions please.

Hi, JohnFought
You might find some inspiration here http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=33168&p=292589&hilit=helix#p292589
BTW what a coincidence - I was just listening to The Clash - I Fought The Law -
Thank you. I will study this and see if it can help. Seems a little beyond me yet. And I'm still open for more suggestions from the talented users out there.

Soft serve is an organic shape, using a geometric solution will not look natural, I'd suggest using deformation tools like FFD, SDS, Soapbox, etc.
I used SDS for a very quick test.
Another quick soft serve example, this time I twisted the proxy.

It's all in the proxies, Uh Solo?
Will you be working on some tutorials when SDS2 comes out????? (please, please,...pretty please.) -
All proxy for basic shape, then a quick sculpt for melting.
I will be helping where I can once SDS2 becomes available.

Awesome model Pete, I'm looking forward to Proxies for Dummies as well
Here's a model I made for us poor folk that don't have SDS2 (or as in my case, are deficient in using SDS1 ) It'll look good from a distance...
Step-by-step included in the model...only ruby used was FredoScale.

Guess this didn't get posted yesterday as I thought it did. My design parameters for this "swirl" are as follows. 10'-6" high with an 84" base. The softserve type swirl model will be needed to separate for transport/erection in height sections from base at 48", then another 42" with 36" top piece. All of the methods described above appear to be beyond my current skill level with SketchUp. Could one of you wizards out there construct this model?
