Importing 3D Formats?
-
I am putting together a electro-mechanical model collection and use McMaster-Carr quite a lot for the 2d drawings they have for many parts. But they also have a number of 3d formats which I am interested in. Is there an (inexpensive) program to convert any of these formats into something SketchUp can use?

For all these in a same pack, that will be maybe difficult
for 3D this one is a shareware

I found SimLab Soft has SketchUp importers for .step and SolidWorks. I tried the Step trial version of the importer and it works very well.
The problem is that it works very well - it doesn't miss a single detail, which is really not my goal. I want to keep as low-poly as possible.
Second issue is Components everywhere - this gear was 200 Definitions. It's probably a good thing, but in the time it will take to explode and clean-up the import, I can create the model from the 2d prints faster.

MoI can import several of those formats and has a very good sketchup exporter, not sure if $300 counts as low cost though?

An old post but now you have Fusion 360 or OnShape or FreeCad that can import/export for free in formats compatible with SU!
This site has more than an half million objects!
