Create and Place a race-track into a terrain
-
Hi everyone,
I' new to SketchUp and there are some things I don't understand. Here's what I want to do: I' like to create a race track with bar marks on a mountain terrain. So I created my terrain with the sandbox tools. So far so good. But now I don't know how to go on:
=> Which tools should I use to create my track? It has straights and curves and there should be bar marks on the side, so it should look like this (I created this with the rectangle tool, but I need curves as well):

and thats how the path should look like (I made this in Illustrator):

=> And finally I wanna place it on my terrain map. So that it looks like its build in the terrain:

Any ideas how to do that? Thx

are you building an rfactor track?

To place the road on the terrain do the following:
Make a profile of the road you want
use the follow-me tool to create the road
place the road over the 3d terrain
use the stamp tool to create a level surface
lower the road to the terrain
done! There might be complications depending on elevation changes of the road but I forgot to try that. This is a start, at least.

No, I want to do something similar to the model used in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYI_48xF_a0, but I don't want the track to be on such a platform. I'd like that it fits on the terrain, so that it fits the decline of the terrain.

There might be complications depending on elevation changes of the road but I forgot to try that. This is a start, at least.I created the road with the follow-me tool, worked really well. But placing it with the stamp tool, puts the road on a platform, so that I don't have a decline at all. Or am I doing it wrong? It would be perfectif the road would have the same decline and difference in altitude as the terrain itself. Is that possible?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Stefan,
I am working for long with this problem. The only way is at present, the Freehand tool from Fredos tools on surface. The disadvantage is that you can not draw curves.
We should ask Fredo whether something like the Catmull spline or F-spline (Bezier Plugins by CadFather) on the surface tools would be feasible.
With the F-Spline and Catmull-Spline it can happen that they are drawn sometimes below the surface.

Hi Charly,
I see. Curves would be nice, but if there is no other way it would also be fine for me to do it with edges instead. What tool did you use to put the track onto the terrain?
All the best

I found another -- simple -- way to do what you (I think) want.
create the road as above, and use the extrude line plugin to pull the edge of the road down through the terrain. Intersect and remove the terrain and drop the road down to the desired level. You can even keep the extruded lines to establish some amount of base to the road.

Use the Drape tool to lay out the road on the terrain. Then use Joint Push Pull to elevate or depress the road.

Hi dsarchs and Wyatt,
Thanks a lot for your input. I'll try both methods.
EDIT: Sorry, I didn't install it correctly. Works fine now, and I'll test it. Thx.
