Why the followme doesn't work as expected ?
-
see my picture
why it doesn't do the same result as a push/pull ? why I lost a face ? thanks
-
HiNics,
What do you "expect" from it?
More exactly what path are you trying to follow and with what face?
(It is not obvious from the picture, sorry) -
well I did a follow me on my door to create the moulding
here's the same door view from the front and behind ..
but if you take a look on the behind view, there's no face between the moulding and the door frame .. because of the followme .. if I do a push/pull, its ok but that's not what I wanna do... I thought it was my ruby script that creates my door my its the same result if I do it manually.
thanks again

@Gaieus:
I just reproduced the condition in nics's first illustration.
I believe that because the rectangle in the foreground is engaged/glued to the box, Sketchup got confused, because the segment touching the box is no longer part of the rectangle.
If nics was to make a group of the box first, then make the rectangle, then do the follow-me, he will get the expected result of a replicated box. -
OK, I see now, thanks.
And Mitcorb; yes, that is a possible reason. I also often create my follow me objects as separate groups instead just to avoid incidental issues like this. -
ahh great it works with a group .. thanks !

I consider myself honored to have been of good assistance to you, nics

@ nics:
Regarding the empty back face on the door frame, this may be a similar effect of the PushPull tool. You can simply trace with the pencil tool one of the edges of the missing face and it should fill in. If it does not, then you can draw a diagonal across the open area. This should cause the face to fill, but will not guarantee that the face is a single plane. If it is a single plane, you can erase the diagonal and the face will remain.
Also, sometimes there are unseen endpoints along what appears to be one straight segment. You will need to "connect all the dots" to close the face.
In most cases a face will not fill if the edges are not completely on the same plane.
Sometimes Sketchup seems not to notice whether all edges can form a plane. This is due to some ambiguity in the workings of the program "behind the curtains".
