Teaser - Component Comparison
-
Just wanted to tease you all a bit. I finally got a working prototype of a tool that compare components against each other for geometric similarities - and figure out the difference in their axis. That way - it can replace objects that are geometrical similar, but at different axis into instances of the same definition. (If you ever imported from Revit you know how annoying the models are.)
I have no timeline for this plugin. Need to run tests and catch edge cases and work out a nice UI.
This is just a very rough early experiment at the moment. But I figured since so many have asked for it you'd like to know it's on its way. (And you can remind me if I should get distracted. )

I just want to remind you Not to get distracted from important stuff like UV Toolkit 2.

Doh!

will be great, if and when you make it happen!
in autocad, with a 3rd party overlay i have this ability for timber processing... nice to make all parts truly the same, the same.
now, is there a plugin to detect 2 exact components sitting on top of one another? would ease my concerns with estimating when i do a part count or materials list export...

Instances of the same definition sitting on top of each other?

fantastic, thomthom! this will be perfect for that pesky issue of turning xfrog leaves into a single component! looking forward to it.

Sounds like a perfect use!

Oohh! Yea - good example. Forgotten about the XFrog trees. I got a big collection I never got around to use really. (Good thing the office paid for it... )
They'll be good test examples.

hmmm... weren't X-Frog leaves groups in chunks? Need to group each individual leaf in order to run a comparison I think...

Instances of the same definition sitting on top of each other?
yes, i build framing / heavy timber structures and the one thing i miss about my acad / 3rd party add on is a 'check for duplicates' function, which searches the model for duplicate pieces parts sitting atop one another. it checks part numbers as well as compares geometry. this is a check so i don't fat finger and multiple copy paste something on top of one another - and insures that when i export a material list out (for use in estimating) i get a correct piece count...
but that should probably go into another thread!
-
THat would be an easy thing to build into the plugin really. If they are currently the same component, it would be really to make a standalone plugin just for that. But if they are different components, with identical geometry, then Thom's script could turn them into the same component, then weed out the duplicates in the same location.

a relatively slow process, but definitely doable thanks to your previous plugins! - select all faces within large groups, convert faces to individual groups, explode large groups and then... component comparison. will be nice to be able to change materials or dare i say, subdivide and bend leaves a bit...

Hey Thomthom,
Any news on progress? I'm running into this problem is i write this message
Thx!

No progress I'm afraid. I've had no time to work on this. Latest development test is here: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=30143
