Best tool for cutting terrain.

I wish to simulate the digging of a trench on some textured terrain that has been snapshot from google earth.
I am not yet aware of which tool i should be using to cut into the terrain to create the longitudinal void needed for the trench.
Any ideas. Sandbox tools?

I should make clear that this being terrain, it is not a flat plane.

I think JointPushPull (plugin) could do it easily. Do you need vertical walls for the trench? If not, the Smoove tool (on pre-selected areas) of the Sandbox would also be fine. Needs some experimenting with its offset values (can never be 0 to make really vertical walls).
Or even the Stamp tool could do it (again, not with 0 offset)
