Camera chops off the foreground!?!

Hello,
I could really do with some help resolving an issue with the camera tool. When I place the little man on the ground to have a look at the view it makes the foreground disappear. Everything behind a certain line gets cut from the view. I need to see the ground I'm standing on but instead it just cuts it out and I can see through the 'face' beneath me...not great. There's quite a lot of my model that goes missing in the view until I zoom extents to get back to normal. SO ANNOYING!!! Help??
