Generally you'll need to import your file in to an application that can load the format then export as something SU can read form there.

e.g. say i want to import a .3dm file, id open it in something like rhino then export as dwg and import that in to SU.

Theres a few exceptions where ruby importers exist for some file formats, but generally your better off trying to convert to something SU can import using the built in importers.
