For anyone who is interested in being involved in a historical preservation project, please visit our Google Group and site. We could use modelers and web site administration help, so come on over and join the team.

    Google Approved!!
    http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/2010/03/modeling-californias-carnegie-libraries.html

    See some completed models below!

We will be starting off the project by modeling all the existing Carnegie Library buildings in California.(KMZ file of locations at links below) This will be the test case for gaging interest in this type of project, for moving into a program covering the US and other countries.

Pitching this project to the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the original Andrew Carnegie Foundation is the objective. Involvement now could turn into a much longer term projects later.

If your interested in volunteering your time and abilities now we would really appreciate your help to get this off the ground.

    Thanks

          Hi Jax,

I'd suggest to edit the topic subject to something like "Need Modelers for Project - California" as I guess if there are some people interested around there, this would catch their eyes (if, say, they are browsing the "New posts" list in the forum).

And good luck, as I told, hope that some people joins and your project will launch successfully!

Read, as in needing approval before they send?

Never had that type of issue before. Something new?

                  Hi Jax,

I have answered your PM as well as your email - but for the others' sake; a PM is listed in the "Outbox" until the recipient reads it - thenit will "move" to the "Sent messages" box. So no bug or anything just not everybody whom you wrote has read your messages yet.

BTW - are there any takers for the project yet?
It seems to be fun - too bad I am thousands of miles away (there should be another 3D BaseCamp so that we can all visit Mountain View again!)

Yes! I am very pleased to say that Patrick, Museummaker has joined in.

And we are all thousands of miles away. Remember, this is the internet. I have modeled a couple of northern California Carnegie buildings already that are thousands of miles away.

We have a great resource for this project.

                    Carnegie Libraries of California

The Carnegie Libraries of California web site is dedicated to preserving these treasures of history, provided by Pat & Bernie Skehan

                    favicon

These folks are sending use all the graphics they put together for this site. Talk about someone who has traveled along ways. Think how many miles these people took to get the information they did. It's amazing!

Finding these types of sites, and hunting down other information, is all part of the fun in a project like this.

Mike has shown an interest. I guess he has discovered there are quite a few Carnegie buildings in his area and in Europe also. Once we get this test case part of the project close to completion, all those other locations should be interesting to hunt out.

So! No excuses. Come join in Gaieus. We would appreciate your contribution.

From a "distance", you need good images and measurements of the buildings.

That is very true. But this GE modeling, so being spot on isn't as critical, yet we want to be as accurate as possible for the historic value we are creating.

Hoping to garner enough interest so that local folks in the location of some of the Carnegie's would be willing to gather some of that information. It's part of the challenge, especially working with some of the admin folks in the cities. Some have been very helpful, some you would think are guarding their gold. They just won't release some of what they have.

My biggest issue so far has been in my own town. Go figure. Can't get my city to release any as built drawings of our Carnegie. Fear of copy rights seems to be their issue, but working through this kind of stuff is all apart of it.

Makes it kind of sweet when you land on someone who has CAD floor plans and elevations. Makes you feel like you discovered some hidden treasure of something. Kind of cool!

Then I guess I am lucky to have my city as vector plan:

![The "whole" city](/uploads/imported_attachments/iJ3n_PecsPlan1.jpg "The "whole" city")

Zoomed in a little - you can already see the centre

The centre - the historic part with the Medieval town walls (red where I live ;-)

You hold hold of vector plans of your entire city?
Free or did you have to shell out some buck for that?

Yup, the whole (with all those fancy layers they make for GIS) and free πŸ˜‰
(We use them in the Museum, the Heritage Protection Services as well as the City Hall I used to work). I was allowed to have it as I do a whole bunch of works with it (would be pretty easy to quickly pull up a bunch of blocks for GE actually).

Not sure how much time I can dedicate to this but you can be sure I'll help out as and when I can!

Just one question, what's a Carnegie?! Sorry to be a bit dense but us Brits only know it as the name of the Philanthropist and as a suffix to sports teams!

Do a Google Search on Andrew Carnegie. He was the Philanthropist that donated funds for all the Carnegie Library buildings to be built. Even Though today, many of the buildings are no longer libraries, they are still "Carnegie's" and worthy of being preserved as part of the historical record.

Bit behind schedule but will get Yreka finished tonight. πŸ˜„

Few quick questions though, I believe Yreka was built in two parts (an extension was built in 1980) and so I am modeling both at the minute - is that the correct way to procced?

Also, despite my best efforts I am unable to find any perpendicular images of the sides of the library. I have enough info from angled photographs of the front to construct something resembling the real world, which is what i will do, so hope this is OK also.

Do a Google Search on Andrew Carnegie. He was the Philanthropist that donated funds for all the Carnegie Library buildings to be built. Even Though today, many of the buildings are no longer libraries, they are still "Carnegie's" and worthy of being preserved as part of the historical record.

Ah right yes, I am aware of him and his works! Was more wondering about the terminology. πŸ˜„ Makes perfect sense now.

I have started my first model anyway, and hope to get it finished today (its 9am, Sunday here!). Thoroughly enjoyable!

Haven't seen anything yet. Stop off at one of those York pub's for a cold one? LOL! Look forward to see what you come up with.

Upload the SKP file to the 3D Carnegie group or Google docs and I'll take a look, and instruct where I can.

Thanks for your contribution. Hope to see more!
