I am modeling a small room so it is hard to get a good overall view of it from within it so what I want to do is show the layout from above, however normally the only light coming in would be from the window not from the space where the ceiling would be. I need a plane that is invisible but still blocks light. I realize there are a couple workarounds like changing the exposure or making a rectangular light right by the window and turning off the sky light. I just want to know if there is a direct way to block the light.

I don't know how it would work in Vray (but maybe it does as you'd need a separate alpha map to see through) but in SU, if you paint a face with a transparent png file, it will still cast shadows. Have a look at this topic (more exactly the post I'm linking) where I attached a small png file that could be used in SU.
