Which is the best plugin to create a flat map of a 3d model so that it can be rebuilt as a physcial model ?

I presume by 'flat map' you probably mean an 'unfolded model' - so try Jim's
unfoldruby.
However, if you want 'slices' then try mySliceror Asteronimo'sSliceModelerrubies... -
unfold is kinda what i want ... is there one that will create the fixing tabs ?

There's no unfold with tabs that I know of... You could write a tool to add tabs ?????
For around $38 you could use http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/ which unfolds 3D shapes [e.g. obj file exported from SUp] and adds tabs... it's free to try... You can make images or pdfs of the output BUT it needs a password to work fully with dxf exports etc... -
