      Can anyone help when i go to select something by clicking and dragging across the screen my screen goes black and i can see what i am selecting.

        John,

        It's your graphics card having problems with the OpenGL system. You should try to download and install the latest(or a newer) display driver from the card chipset manufacturer's website (usually Nvidia or Ati. If you are lucky (it works with only a few cards) it might be enough to turn off Fast Feedback (Window>Preferences>OpenGL) and restart SU. If you are unlucky or have a motherboard-integrated graphics card (like thr Intel chipset)you might have to turn off Hardware Acceleration from the same dialog.

          But it doesn't happen in other sketchup files
