Save as 3d DWG with Materials
-
Greetings,
I am using Sketchup Pro7. Can a 3d Model with its materials be saved as a DWG or 3ds with the materials still in place on the model? I am not having success importing into 3d max 8. Any suggestions?

3DS can be saved with materials, but the archaic format impooses its limitations: texture names have to be in the 8.3 format, for instance.
The DWG format has no standardized place to store texture information, so SU does not support it. I think Autodesk uses Xdata to store objects' texture names, but SU cannot read or write them.

Thanks Annsi, sounds like you know your stuff. I guess the thing I need to do is buy a Render for my SketchUp Pro or reassign the materials in 3d Studio. I have also been using Blender and Maya, but SketchUp is so great and easy. I guess SU uses a different programming lag rather than what the other software packages uses.
Thanks.

Scott,
I am not a MAX user myself, but I understand that there are members of the forum who use the SU/MAX combination successfully. What about the OBJ or FBX formats?
I also remember a post by Solo explaining his workflow using Deep Exploration to translate directly from SU to MAX.
