At 76, SketchUp is looking a nice addition to my fun modelling efforts.
But, no way could I afford the Pro version.

Is there a plugin that would enable me to both Import and Export say .obj files with the free version of sketchUp?

    Brian

No, not that I know of. There used to be, but it doesn't work with the current versions.

You can model in Sketchup and then open it in DoubleCAD XT, and if you don't use the model in DoubleCAD, you can save it in .DXF format and open it in something like Blender or other app that will import that file type.

Blender also opens kmz - the "native" format for Google Earth SU free can also export (obviouslz). But Double CAD sounds to be less hassle.

Are you sure it doesn't work? (I didn't try though...)

Welcome to SketchUcation by the way Brian.

Jim keeps a mighty list of ruby scripts here. Definitely worth a look:

and type in obj you'll find a selection of obj importers and exporters. i wouldn't be surprised if there were scripts for other formats as well...

Thanks for your help but I find this forum site most peculiar to work around.

That last extensions-index link for example wont accept my user name?

                    Brian

PS And that .obj plugin does not work for me in the free SketchUP 7.

You need a seperate login for the extensions index/tutorials bit of the site.

As for the plugin not installing, in what sense is it not installing?

Your saying I need a NEW user name and password to get access to another part of the forum?
Thats crazy! I don't think I would do it---- just on principle!.(It was bad enough that I had to create a brand new individual password simply for this site in the first place)

The .obj plugin is there, installed, but it does nothing.(It's there on the Plugin dropdown)
Perhaps someone who has actually got it to work in the free version of SketchUP may have some installing instructions differing from those provided.

Sorry if I sound grumpy but it all seems messier than I am used to.

                          Thanks

I know what you mean, it is a bit annoying having 2 logins for the forum and the site. I believe it is to do with the fact that the site is run using wordpress and the forum phpBB. 2 separate systems 2 separate logins.

Not sure what you mean by having to create a password to get use the forum, though. I would have thought the reasons for that were fairly obvious.

With all the many, many sites I am involved on I have the same user name and password. This site not only would not accept that password but wanted a peculiar/un-necessary mixed construction password.

I am too old to becoming a Lemming to sillyness.

Well say i was to login to your account and start posting as you (as youd chosen a weak password), i could ruin your name on this forum. Assuming youve used your real name this could have consequences in the real world i.e. losing you work, not making contacts.

Of course i've assumed youve used your real name there, it's entirely possible that you havent but it would be nice if people felt safe enough to use their real name on the internet rather than everyone becoming anonymous.

Just as you can refuse to accept phone calls from certain phone numbers.
