I am making a scale model in sketch up free version. I am modeling a pontoon boat I intend to build. I painstakingly drew one pontoon but want to copy and paste the second pontoon. But when I try I cannot get it to paste exactly where I want it to paste.

I think you should use the shortcut "M" ,and at the same time press the key "Ctrl"
But make sure you have select what you want to paste.

          So don't 'copy and paste',
but 'select and move' (but also keeping the original one by using CTRL)
In this move-action, you can put it exactly where you want it.

Qué sais je? there is still so much to be learned...

If you choose a base point at the corner or midpoint that has some meaning e.g. base of a tree or corner of a bench leg.
