How to select everything on a layer

you would need to take the out of the group. another way is to select just the faces in "1st floor" layer group and put those on "1st floor" layer, but keep "1st floor" group on "1st floor objects" layer that way when you hide "1st floor" layer, only the faces will be hidden.

check this file. i turned color by layers on to make it easier to see. its kinda a confusing concept so play with this for a while. the jist of it is that a group can be on one layer and includes everything in
it. but its faces can be on another layer and hidden seperatly.

BTW, what you asking "how to hide things" is different than "how to select things" which is the title of your post, so i hope i answered the right question.

The solution - with layers "embedded" or "nested" each other - could only be justified and useful if the layer system would also be "tree like" (such as grouping for instance). Since it is not but only "linear", you should always avoid scenarios when entities belong to several layers through nested groups (or components) except for Layer 0 where all your primitives should be sitting.
So do what Xrok suggests; get the nested content outa' there somehow.

Gaieus, wouldn't it be nice if someone would ruby a scene manager that combined all these elements, outliner, layers, styles....
on that note isn't it strange that google themselves never seem to release any ruby's. included ruby's ,centerpoint... aside?

Oh sure. And I've been yearning for a tree like, collapsible layer system such as the Outliner for instance. Or better say the system itself, not only the management window.

Thank you xrok1 and Gaieus. Nested groups on different layers have been very useful up to this point for controlling visibility. Seem like the usefullness is at its end now.
Like you said, it seems I have to get the nested content out of the "master group". That brings back the question of how to select everything on a specific layer. Is there an easy way to do this? As far as I can see "select all on layer" works only for lines/faces, not for groups/components.

it does work for groups or components but strangely enough
you have to have at least 2 selected; can be 1 face and 1 group or 2 groups/components; to envode the select>all on layer option ???? -

strange isn't it? it should be in the menu in the layer manager too.
