hello, i am a long time reader, first time poster.

so i have done a quite large model of 100 hectars and i need to get it into maya to make an animation of it. i have sketchup pro 6 and can export into 3ds, obj but not FBX.

my question is: what is the most efficient way of exporting it into maya for it not to be too heavy? i use aLot of layers because its divided up by each areas, i dont use many components as i whilst i was modelling this monster i was also learning things..still am about sketchup (which might be a bad thing?) i think each tree is part of a group (which might be a problem?) and the same applies for people but all the houses are stand alone faces, planes etc.. i exported it onto a 3ds file (1/3rd of the 100 hectars) and its very very slow in maya. (in sketchup i draw 1:1 i dont know if that matters for maya..) i am using an imac G4 4 gig ram.

let me know if you need any more info to help me on this..thanks πŸ˜„

Hi quBe and welcome as a "first time poster"!

Why cannot you export into FBX? My SU (Windows), can. (Note that 3DS is not an ideal format however "cross-platform" it generally is).

        Gai...

i re-exported it as an obj having ungrouped some stuff and this is what i got

          SketchUp Entities processed:

          Groups: 3112
          Instances: 429
          Faces: 46461
          Materials: 23

          OBJ Entities exported:

          Faces: 373279
          Materials: 23

these numbers dont mean much to me..sizewise but might give you an idea of the size of the model (or my mistake in having so many groups?)

the FBX just doesnt exist as an option, i dont know why, i will look for a plugin or something..

will try and import it into maya now and will post back

          thanks

Not having the .fbx export is a bit weird, might want to try doing a repair or a reinstall.

As for why the scene is so slow in maya, there must be something unpurged in there that is slowing things down, as i cant imagine a model of that size taking maya down.

              Question,

in my maya list of meshes, i have like 99999 meshes..

each building FLOOR is seperate to another, i.e it is not grouped as one building object meaning that each FLOOR is one mesh..which creates a whole lot of hassle for me.

if i group each building and then export it from sketchup as a 3ds (which works fine for me now on maya for some reason..its just slow though :/) will that mean that maya will regognise each building as one mesh? including the wireframe skin?

thanks for your help guys πŸ˜„

as far as the FBX thing im not bothered much as i got a 3ds plugin for maya and its ok now, even took the colour by layer from sketchup πŸ˜„
