Yeah - guess you're right about that, Stinkie...
Point taken...And once again, sorry for hi-jacking this thread...

Rodger I am not sure what you mean by "extreme" sail plan?many sails?Sail area? Sail to hull ratio?
Ither or I do love these ships and Hope to get Employment on one some day,but for now modeling them is great!Ive started HMS Bellona 74 two days ago and thought you guys would like to see how it is done in a WIP thread, maybe Ill just hack this one
There are still many flaws and tweaking takes loads of time, and this being the biggest ship ive done to date,it should take even longer.
I am just surprised as how far forward the jibs are. That creates a tremendous amount of leverage, however if your models are accurate representations of real vessels that worked successfully then I can assume that all is as it should be. I think the fault is with my memory but those bowsprits are certainly way out there.
-
Ahhh I C Rodger,
I assure you that my models are accurate to plans,Ive had this Question before as the bowspirit on a ship rig usually contributes 1/3 of the overall length of the ship. For comparison HMS Leopard being a 50gun is in build a bit smaller than the 1st rate HMS Victory and the Victory has 5,468.4 m2 of sails, more than todays 5 masted Royal clipper which has 42 seperate sails. -
Update Time :
Railings took much time and fitting all the seperate things to the decks and hull is another time consumer.Capstan;6pounder and bits are taken off Leopard as they are the same, just adjusted size on certain parts as this 74 is abit bigger than Leopard 50.

Ahhh beautiful. I just found this thread and as a fellow that spends what little time I have pretending to be a model shipwright I am impressed with your accuracy. Very nice tallships and I look forward to seeing more.
Jeff
P.S. Bellona and the poor 'ol' Leopard...do I detect a Patrick O'Brian fleet in the works or are you specifically staying with ships in which you can still get original monographs for?
-
Thank you Joppermann,
Glad you like them, and as for which ships I build..I have hundreds of different ship plans of this Era,which ever appeals to me I attempt,I have built Belonna twice before and failed.
I am on Julian Stockwins series ATM and have some of O
brians books,no time to read 2 series so hes next.Updates :
Much still needs to be done in modeling but I had to see what se looked like in the water

All guns added and base colours..58000 polys
-
Progress, but grrr those masts took ages. The guns stowed and ports closed in this render, the guns alone are +- 25k polys, and they are really as low as I can get them.
-
Well have I learned alot since the last post,
I recently started using max 09 for the render to texture feature,well....Here is a shot of my boat I started yesterday,no textures here in this shot, just showing the shading that Max gives, this is a in game render.
Here are some shots after the textures were added in SU,exported and baked in Max (also in Game renders)
Here is where she is now,the sails were made in Max as adding wind to cloth is a realism I cant manually model, same for the flag above.
The textures in the last 4 shots are straight from SU to KT,Ill bake them tommorow and do some more renders to show the differance, but overall I think this is a killer combo for speedy modeling.

GA! All those curves! How long does it take to model those curves?
BTW, beautiful work. One day, one day....
-
great work, I like very much the hulls...
MALAISE
-
Great work... hope you not spending too much time modelling...
-
Glad to see you here!
Not too much time modeling, get some time off while rendering textures to head to the beach, maybe eat aswell
Not to long Eco,Plans really do help

Started the USS Essex on tuesday and been doing about 9 - 10 hours a day on her.
There is plenty of history about the ship online but heres a quick ref : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Essex_(1799)
My plans indicate her to have 42 guns,a ship rigged American Frigate ,40 pound carronades on her gundeck and the rest are 12 pounders.
Oh and she has a astonishing 134 belaying pinsShes not going to be low poly but I am trying to keep her down, shes 60k at the moment.

I just joined the forum and found this thread on the HMS Ontario. As a model shipwright I was most impressed with your work. I had a question, how you were constructing the hull's and if you use any specific ruby scripts? I am working on a 16 gun brig and could use some insights.
