Setting defaults for file viewing

Is there a way to set defaults for "file/open" that displays thumbnails instead of filenames?

I've just tried and it always goes back to List view for me. Ther is a Priview window on the right however...

For me clicking a little icon in the top right of the 'open' window lets me change the view, seems to stick after closing SU as well. Perhaps its an operating system thing that means yours goes back to normal gai?

MY OS is set to list every folder "by details" not "list" so it shouldn't go back to list mode.
