Jay Leno has a slot where he meets regular folks on the street and asks them simple questions that everyone should know, now he has started a new extension to this with the Jay-walk allstars.

OMG!! is this the level of education in this country today?

      Hi Pete,

      Yes, its funny.
But I still find it very disturbing that people like this actually seem to take a pride in their ignorance.

I don't mean to sound pompous but I love this quote attributed to Cicero

"To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child."

This describes these type of people perfectly.
This actually come across as possessing a childlike mentality.

      Regards
      Mr S

Q:"Name a country who America fought during the Second World War"

          A:"Uh, the British?"

People who think the US fought the British during WW2, are just too plain thick to educate, I think. I mean, teachers need something to work with. 😄

If so, that would make them kind of smart, doesn't it? 😄
Reminds me of the old Jerry springer show that was staged from the beginning to the end.

It's this really simple psychological trick used to attract viewers: giving them a (false) sense of superiority.
"Look, those people are actually more silly and/or dumber than me"
Literally 'feel-good-television' and 'television is the Opium for the people'.

Seems unlikely. No educational system can be that bad. As far as I can tell, there's two possibilities here. One: these people are just stupid "beyond repair". Two: they get paid to look stupid.

The second possibility is the more likely one, I think. People who think the Brits and the Yanks were enemies in the second World War despite all the films, books, documentaries, articles etc on the subject? I'm having a hard time believing they exist.

I don't know if you folks know who Fantasia Barrino is, but she is the American Idol winner from a couple of years back. She went to the same high school I did. In an interview she did, she blamed the school system for her not being able to read. Now I may not be the most literate person in the world but that's where I draw the line. I sure as hell can read and so can sooo many other people that I went to school with. I just don't see how you can blame the schools when I went to the same ones with the same teachers! Pisses me off! Sorry to rant... but when I saw this video it reminded me of her.

lol. Wouldn't be the first case of undetected dyslexia. Well, I hope she's dyslectic.

Did she graduate? If so, the school system has indeed failed.

Nitskie, she did not graduate. She had a kid when she was like 15 or 16 and had to drop out. She supposedly got her high school diploma at some middle college.

We obviously all have high opinion about human race.
The worst thing about it is that these people are the
ones that vote, and they are not a minority. We are.

It is a very funny clip. The truth about education in this country is that we are all partly to blame. It's partly the fault of the teachers for letting the kids who aren't learning pass on the the next grade so they don't feel bad or look bad in front of their peers. It's partly the kids fault for not giving a damn about learning in the first place. It's partly the parents fault for being so busy with work, updating their myspace, etc. to even ask the kids how their day went or where they had problems in school and find out how they could help.

I feel lucky to have had a mom who was very involved in our school and the learning process, and thank god that I took personal responsibility for learning early on in my education. It's fascinating that these people would want to be on TV so badly that they were willing to exhibit their own personal level of idiocy to the world. It's sad we are more concerned with what clothes the Hollywood actors are wearing than helping the less fortunate in our own communities. We are more concerned with getting on a lame TV show than what's going on in the world (i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel) I think the American people need to get their heads out of the sand.

well as far as wanting to be on TV so bad--i.e. get their 15 minutes. . .some people are willing to display a lot worse than their lack of historical knowledge. I think there are probably some --and I'm just guessing here-- but about 745,000 Courtroom Judge Judy Type Shows. there are about 900 different Jerry Springer Type shows. Education is almost looked on as a ribbon of shame. If one displays any intelligence at all he is called elitist or pretentious. . . "Not a real down to earth guy" that's not to say that the Education system has gotten so far outta whack that to fail little Johnny for saying that George Washington was the first president of Washington Mutual Savings cuz it might hurt his self esteem . .or it's not PC to focus on such Euro-centric ideas of Dates, and Figures. . .What have we become?

You have to wonder what the Aliens who are monitoring all of this stuff are thinking.

Gork is probably saying to Zork,"Geez these guys can't even fill the 15 minutes!"

If I make it look easy...It is probably easy

Thanks Pete; that made my day also....
it reminded me of a segment on a crazy show here in AU last year. Julian Morrow, TV presentor walks the streets of America and askes questions of similar Jay-walkers....

I especialy like when the map comes out and Julian get people to mark the country they're talking about.... Australia gets the marker every time!!!

Unfortunately, there are people that ignorant, but I would say they are the exception and not the rule. I'm sure Leno went through quite a few "smart" people before he found these three, but how funny would the segment be if all three contestants could answer the questions correctly. What amazes me is that they would agree to go on TV to be made fun of, even if they are acting. I guess some people will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame.

                                        My avatar is an anachronism.

On a second note, knowledge isn't the same as intelligence.
Some people are actually smart, but just miss common knowledge.
