Construction Drawings / 2D drawings from SU7 Free
-
Hey all,
I have been hard at work for several months designing a new house, both the conceptual drawings ("paper walls") and the structural drawings showing all dimensional lumber, framework, etc. I have been talking with the County Development Dept, and my next step is to properly produce Construction Drawings from my 3D model. I am aware that SU7 Pro includes LayOut, which will do a very nice job of giving 2D drawings, but is it possible to do this in the Free edition? .. and by "possible", i will go to some pretty great lengths to not have to spend $1000 on SU Pro!thanks

Welcome to GSCF.
Layout is only available with the Pro version, however the pro version is only a few bucks short of $500.

Hey Joe, where you goin' with that hammer in your hand?
I guess my question is... is this a one shot deal or do you intend to use SU for future projects where plans are required.
Also, by proper drawings I assume they mean all the necessary required code plans which could be everything from the slope of the roof to plumbing, electrical et al. Unless you are up on all this stuff you might want to think of spending the SU Pro dough on someone who can whip these up for you.
Good luck. -
Hi Joe (the builder?-), Don't know how much you plan to spend building your house, but $500.00 won't break the bank. Later, you can use SU pro to do the remodel. BTW, can't you down load a full trail program to see if making a permit plan is actually doable? Layout has some limitations. Here at home the Building Department bends over backwards to help non professionals so maybe you can actually do a permit set. I could not know, but I do not think that any Architect here has ever completed a permit set of house plans only with SU.

Joe,
You should download the 30 day trial version of SU Pro to determine if it will work for you, but SU/Layout alone is not intended for creating construction drawings. You might be better off getting a home design software from Office Depot, BestBuy, or such place; they've programs ranging from $50 to $200 (one even uses SU, but I don't remember its name).

Do you have any personal experience with Viacad? I'm considering ViaCAD 2D as one of the few affordable CAD packages.
For now I've been able to get by with ProgeCAD Smart (FREE Autocad clone), but it's only for personal use and need a good CAD package for commercial use. -

for a commcerial usage you maybe should evaluate the ViaCAD Pro version (249U$) or at least the 2D/3D version instead of the pure 2D version, the latter it's only a handfull of bucks more:
