Explode problem
-
I downloaded a balustrade from the 3D Warehouse and copied it several times in my model. To export the model to Kerkythea, I like to explode high-ploy components, so I started going through each copy, exploding them one-by-one. When I got to almost the last pillar, suddenly all the previous exploded copies turned transparent (lost their faces), almost as if X-ray had been turned on (but outlined with heavy black lines).
What is going on? These were all copies of the same component, none of which did this until I got to the last copy. Oddly, when I pan or orbit, the balustrades show up as normal, but as soon as I stop, all the faces are gone.
I can't post the problem, because when I copy it and paste it into a new file, the problem doesn't occur (and I can't post the building itself).

Why on Earth do you explode your components when exporting them to Kerky?
Anyway,if copying them solves the problem, copy everything into a new file.
Then clean your file from everything you cannot post here and post it with only the defaulted pieces in it.

I explode them because with a high-poly model, it just won't export--it freezes ( and I have 4GB RAM).
I'll try the copy trick and see what happens. Although if I want to explode all the balustrades, copying won't work. I think I might have to get rid of the offenders and replace them.
I would truly like to know what's going on!

I have never heard of such a behaviour.

yeah, me too.

Lol! It's just the way it works for me. For example, I tried to export the model--it ran into the zillions of faces on the balustrade and got slower and slower until it froze. So I exploded all until the end (when they went transparent) and undid the problem, leaving the remaining balustrades unexploded. Then I tried the KT export again and it zipped through all those meshes until it came to the unexploded part and this time it crashed!
Obviously, these copies are linked, but how? I tried making the offending ones unique, but that didn't work, either.
I just tried to export it again--there are 270K faces in the balustrades--it zipped right through the exploded ones and then stopped to a crawl when it hit the unexploded copies. It finally froze at 98,800. I need to find a way to explode these!

Hi Steve6, hi folks.
Try this:
1 - Delete the last balustrade that is causing the problem.
2 - Copy one of the exploded balustrade and paste it to replace the deleted one.
Save the file and then export.
Just ideas.

Thanks--that's the answer, but i sure would like to know what caused this!

Well, I managed to explode the remaining pillars by exploding one, all went transparent, then exploding the next one--and all had faces again--and so on down the line.
I tried to export again, and it just zipped along until it reached a certain point--then it slowed to a crawl and finally crashed.
I don't have a clue what's happening!

Have you gone to the Kerky website to see if anyone there can help? They would probably have a better idea of what's happening... make sure you go to the Sketchup intergration section of the Forum...

Yes, I have posted the problem there--no help yet!
