Difficulty Modelling something
-
specifically, this. I saw it on another thread and I thought I would have a go at it, but my lack of experience seems to be getting the better of me. I guess I just don't know where to start- once I get started I'll be fine, but I feel I just don't have enough reference to work with- onwe birds' eye view photo and one quirky perspective view.
So far all I have managed to do is outline the top view, but I am completely at a loss...
Any ideas?

Sorry about that...

Maybe this video can help you

mxabucknell,
Keep in mind that this is just a quick demonstration of a general method. I didn't invest enough time and effort in this to nail the exact shape.

OOPS!
I went on a plugin spree the other day, and I forgot about ffd- I will get it later, when I'm on a computer with Sketchup- I will have a look at that .skp as well.
Thanks a load...

I had a look at your model- very nice claps But, what did you use to go from the wire frame to the fleshed out model. I tried a from contours, but it wasn't wuite the same...
I just pray that you didn't use soap skin bubble, because then I'm really stuffed

A combination of skin.rb and hand-stitching.

for modeling organic freeform shapes get hold of a feature-based NURBS modeler as e.g. ViaCAD Pro f. Win/OSX which does support advanced surface modeling, at least if you wanna export as IGES/STEP/SAT into e.g. CAM systems for production:
2D / 3D CAD and Drafting Software | CAD Software for Mac and Windows | CAD Programs | Drawing Software | Architecture Design Software
2D / 3D CAD and Drafting Software, CAD Software for Mac and Windows, CAD Programs, Drawing Software, Architecture Design Software
(www.punchcad.com)
SU import avail.

Id have to go with norbert on this, its a lot easier doing stuff like this with NURBS. You can then convert to polys if you need to. MoI is a good place to start for easy NURBS modelling.
