The OLO, iPhone powered Notebook!
-
Hi Guys,
Just to keep you up to speed on the latest gadgets about to
hit the market, I present the OLO, an iPhone powered Notebook.
What a great idea. I use my iPhone these days to keep my life
organised (Sad, I know!) but I find it difficult to read the
small screen doing emails and such.I have an EePC and find it good and VERY portable put its a
PC and I don't like that OS any more.It looks like OLO, http://olo-computer.com/ are about to launch
a brillent devise that, if priced well, may big a big seller IMO
and may even know the Apple AirBook off its perch, not that it
has a great perch in the first place. This is what they are saying about the OLO,
%(#0000BF)[October 14, 2008 The suspense surrounding Apple’s rumoured Netbook
announcement is quite extraordinary. The collective mood swing
towards more convenient and usable wireless devices now seems
overwhelming. People want more producticity on the move without
the weight and the recent eeepc has only served to warm up the
crowd for whatever Apple might be ready to announce later today.
Just to add intrigue, a start-up named OLO Computer is getting
set to launch what appears to be an iPhone-powered notebook/netbook
which uses the iPhone as the CPU and the iPhone docks flat with
the keyboard surface to offer its touch-screen as a trackpad.]Just slot the iPhone in and away you go! I like it already

I've been threatening to replace my Sony laptop with a Mac. The Olo web site is real light on info. What happens when your phone rings? No phone, no laptop, which limits one in terms of use. I'll look for an announcement today.
Great find, Mike.
Edit: I reread your post and now understand that Olo is not an Apple product. But I'm still looking forward to Apple's announcement on their netbook.

That looks pretty cool, its a pity there isnt any more about it on their website.
I wonder if there is a separate processor in the laptop itself, or if it just runs of the iphone. So many questions!

Not sure how powerful this would be with just an iPhone cpu.
I'm pretty much like you Mike, using my iPhone to organize my life! This sort of thing could have a use, although if it were April time, I would think it a possible joke

Isnt one of the downfalls of the iphone lack of multi-tasking? I heard that due to lack of RAM, programs or apps cant be minimised, only terminated. I wonder does this machine have some sort of processor itself and just read info from the phone? Looks interesting though.
EDIT: Just read Remus' post now, oops.

The logical and practical way to make something like this would be to build a laptop with a docking slot where the pad would normally go. Slot in your iPhone/iTouch and it docks, syncs, gets charged, acts as the trackpad/button(s) and maybe even as a security key (no iTouch, no workee). An advantage over typical trackpads would be the ability to display... whatever, some buttons or sliders for special purposes. If the phone is used, the audio would be channelled to the laptop sound connections.
I'd like a similar deal for my car audio too. Slot in the iPhone/iTouch and use it as the store for the music, radio channel choices, nav. software, car service record, etc.
