Logo on wall
-
I'm trying to put a logo jpeg on a wall in SU before export to Kerkythea. I import the logo as an image, explode it, and make it a component (KT doesn't seem to recognize it if it isn't a component). This, of course, puts a rectangle around it, so I made a crude clip map in Gimp (if anyone knows how to do this correctly, please help).
The problem is, when I apply the logo to the wall in SU, it flickers on and off as I rotate the wall (the same thing happens in KT), and it renders washed-out and grainy.
Any ideas how to solve this?

The problem is that the pic is taking up the same 'space' as the wall behind it, so SU doesnt know which to show, thus the flickering.
If you select the wall->right click->intersect->with model and then delete the piece of wall behind the pic.

Thanks! I just tried this and it says there are no intersections found! And now it's saying I can't put a component on the face of the wall.

Ok, well on to idea no. 2.
If you go in to the picture component and push/pull it so it goes through the wall. If you then close it, select the wall->right click->intersect with model, then delete the piece from the wall.
You can then delete the box bit of the component and move the pic in to place.

It is often worth considering how things would be built up in reallife in order to model them correctly in Sketchup. For example, the logo would not be on the same plane as the wall.. in all likelihood it would either be mounted on a backing of grp / plastic or the very least be a vinyl-type transfer.
In either case the logo would actually sit in front of the wall between a few millimeters and a few centimetres, is there any reason why you cant just move the logo forward in sketchup, or create a thin box in front of the wall and apply the texture to that instead?

I don’t understand why you are not just projecting logo on the wall??
Exploding image? That’s new to me. So, I tested it and it works! Here is my test. And by the way once image is converted into regular surface, you can just cut your image out as I started here.

Ridix, i assumed steve wanted to preserve any texturing that was already on the wall, as projecting a texture on to it would get rid of any texture you already had.

I keep forgetting SU texture can’t be layered on. May be the easiest way to paste a logo on the wall is to just cut and paste it on the wall image itself. Use graphic editor.

What is this? Can you explain the process step by step. It would seem that you can import shapes from images for use in modeling this way. I don't see any way to "explode" an image.

Peter, you simply import the image as an image...not a texture. It's there on the import dialog box. In fact I do it that way about 90% of the time.
If it's imported in this way it actually is an image, not geometry. It can't cast shadows or be edited in any way except scaling. All you need to do is r-click it and explode. At which point it will turn into the image projected onto a plane. The only difference you will see is that the edges will appear and it will cast a shadow on the ground. However, it will also now appear in the material browser...and you can trim it with the line tool and eraser. -
Great, thanks. I've only been importing images as texture.
