      How can i apply materials in SU in a .3ds imported file? Does it need to be converted to something else?

        Once you have imported the .3ds model you can texture as you would normally.

          i cant apply the material i have to explode or to edit the component to apply the material is there an easier way?

            The import probably comes through as a component/group. Yes, you have to explode or edit it (but each way is just a two click operation).
