Hello from Daniel Tal
-
Greetings to the Sketchucation forums.
I wanted to say hello. My name is Daniel Tal.
I have been a long time SketchUp user. I recently presented at 3D Base Camp, doing two sessions: half of the AutoCAD and SketchUp Session with Mitchel Stangl and the Sandbox session. It was great fun and I got to catch up with many people. Faces got placed with names, which always makes things more real.
I want to say a big thank you to Coen. I got to hang out with him in Boulder last week and drive him down to the airport. I got to know more about Sketchucation. I have not been part of an on-line SketchUp forum since Google bought @Last but this seems like the best place to be.
I currently work for a multi-disciplinary firm in Denver called RNL with Jim Leggitt who also presented at 3D Base Camp.
I hope I can provide help to users but also get answers to questions.
So, I have my first question.
I recently bought a new laptop (for gaming and work). It runs Vista. I have avoided Vista like the plague. But seems like the laptop will not be able to run XP so.I have read the FAQ about SketchUp and Vista on the Google SketchUp page but it was not much help.
I would like to know what I need to do to get SketchUp to work on Vista. I know it will work at base but I already can see issues with my work computer, SketchUp and Vista (I have a duel boot system). I cannot get some menus to work (like shadows) and have strange performance issues. On the up side, I have noticed that for some tasks, Vista out performs XP with leaps and bounds when it comes to SketchUp.
So, hello and thank you for the Help!
Peace and nice to meet you all,
Daniel Tal

Hi Daniel,
I recently got a new Desktop system with Vista...I'd imagine that it's becoming increasingly impossible to get any new PC still running XP. I did have some display problems to begin with, so now run SU in XP mode. No problems at all now.
I'd suggest typing Program Compatability wizard into the Help box and follow the instructions. -
Though, as a Mac guy I can't help with Vista, I wanted to say how I thoroughly enjoyed your presentations at Base Camp. I attended them both, and learned an amazing amount from both your Irregular Terrain Session, and the AutoCad session you co-presented with Mitchel Stangl. I have a couple of site plans coming up which I will post for comment, and probably beg for help with.
Thanks again

Welcome Daniel! Welcome to SCF!!
I was great to meet you too. Both of your presentations were great. You were well prepared and managed your time well. From the comments I heard from people around me in your sessions, I wasn't the only one to walk away with more of an understanding of SketchUp!

Hello Daniel, and welcome to SCF! Can't help with the Vista problem, but I will echo the other praises for your presentations at 3DBC. When Google posts the sessions to YouTube I will definitely be rewatching them (and I encourage everyone who didn't attend to watch them too...invaluable information!).

Welcome Daniel. Glad you are here and sorry I missed your presentation as I was not able to go to Base Camp.

Hey Daniel, it was great meeting you and hanging out when Coen was in town! Welcome to the SketchUcation forums as well! I think you'll like it here!
So for Vista, make sure you have the latest video drivers from your card manufacturer. Sometimes you have to go to their site to get the latest, as opposed to going to your computer manufacturer's site..
Let us know if that works or not, and we'll go from there.
Take care!
Cheers,
- CraigD
P.S. ..you shoulda gone out with us after dinner... we didn't get Coen home till after 4:00 am!

Whats up Craig.
It was great to meet you the other night. I was sharing the room with Coen and saw him strubmle in.I will give the drivers a try for sure. Its a laptop with one of the GeForce cards on it. I'll let you know. I have already scene a marked improvment in some functions with SketchUp in Vista on my desktop at work. (Exporting images that I could not in XP and at a higher setting to boot!)
Also, if you have any landscape terrain that you are doing for GE that you could share, would love to see it.
Peace
Daniel

Hi Daniel and welcome to SCF.
It is good to bring on board your experience and I am sure you will be a big help here, as well as having a good time. -
Hi Daniel,
Welcome the the forum. Coen has been telling me great things
about you and Jim Leggitt and I look forward to have you guys
as part of the community.I have a confession! I missed your presentation at 3D BC, I was
probably at the 'leper colony' smoking cigarettes and chatting
to other full-time residents and occasional visitorsI look forward to seeing the presentation on You Tube, so would
appreciate the heads up when availableMike
