Combining elements / components
-
I'm a new user of Sketchup, obviously, since I'm posting in the Newbie forum. Here's an easy one for you. Let's say I've imported a sketchup "I-beam" model into my drawing that is 8' long, but I want it to 40' long. When I edit the component and try to push/pull the face, it gives me an error saying that I cannot push/pull a curved face. How can I do this without having to copy and paste a bunch of 8' beams?
Thanks

Select the beam and use the scale tool on it. If you grab on handle to start the scale, then type in '5' and press enter (without the quote marks, obviously.)
If you want to be a bit more accurate you should proabbly turn on hidden geometry (view->hidden geometry) and see whats making the face curved.

so ordinarily I should be able to push/pull the face to the desired length? I used to use FormZ and it had a combine function that was pretty neat, would "meld" two or more objects to make one...

Yes, you should be able to push/pull a face if it is coplanar, although obviously in this case it isnt.

I took a close look and there was a bunch of Tape Measure marks on the face that once I deleted I could move the face - looks like they were just left over guides to make the i-beam... thanks for your help!

Hi Jugganaut, hi folks.
If you have smoothed the edges of your I-Beam, all of them, you wont be able to push or pull the ends since it will be seen by SU as a curved face.
If this is the case, make hidden geometry visible and then unsmooth the perimeter of the ends. You will then be able to pull your beam to whatever length you want.
Just ideas
