Can' fill

I am trying to make a plane that is essentially a rectangle with a curve drawn through it connecting two of the parallel sides. I first create a rectangular plane and then draw the curve connecting the two sides using the downloaded Bezier curve tool but then when I try to select the portion of the plane that I want to delete, it just selects the whole plane. How can I divide the plane with a curve?

First thing to do is make sure your curve is actually on the plane. it proabbly is, but you need to check.
Once youve established that the curve is on the plane, select the plane and the curve, right click and hit intersect with model. this should work, otherwise theres osmething funny going on.

I suspect your curve is overlapping and not intersecting the rectangle's sides. If the portion of the curve that fits inside the rectangle is bold and not a light-weight line, then that is the case.
You can fix this by redrawing the rectangle side from the corner to the curve. Make sure you get the black "intersection" inference before you click to complete the line. Do both sides.

sorry for all the questions, you are all a great help! i got the shape filled but now when I try to paint it, it wont fill with the material. Strangely when I go to undo, it says I have have applied the paint and can hence undo it, but I cant see the material...I don't think this problem is limited to the shape I just made.

hmmm, if you go to view->face style, which option have you got checked? Normally it should be 'shaded with textures'
