i have been running windows on my mac via boot camp but am getting tired of rebooting every time i need to cross over to the other side.

so i am left with two alternatives (tried crossover and did not like it): parallels and fusion.

as i do not know well either of them i am turning to this board for some advice. does anyone out there have a track record with either parallels or fusion?

what i run on the windows side is a couple of quite simple apps and others like kerkythea which means i need to render images quite often. i am especially interested in knowing how they perform in situations that require a lot of memory and a good graphic card.

my machine is a macbook pro, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 256 MB NVIDIA GC.

      thanks.

Well if you are running Kerky to render then just buy a cheap PC to use as a render box. This way you can render on the PC and then do other things on your Mac at the same time. Just a thought πŸ˜‰

Can you not get a trial version of Parallels Edson?

I hear it works very well with general software, but with 3d applications im sure it will struggle a little more.

              dylan,
i am testing parallel's trial version. so far so good. a kid in my office is testing vmware fusion.

              csaba,

i am patient. the reason i need the virtual machine is to update my web site which was done in yahoo sitebuilder, only available for PCs. i was doing it by running windows under bootcamp but, since bootcamp is now part of Mac OS 10.5, the old version has expired and i have to find another solution to upgrading the system which i will only do when all the apps i use run smoothly under it.

Edson, can I ask what do you do while kerky is rendering a scene? How long does this take? Since you obviously already own a copy of WindowsXP to run under Boot Camp while not just have a PC for your Site Builder and Kerky? I did this for a while when I was using the POVRay plugin with SU. I had a spare PC just to use with POVRay. I would export the files to a shared drive and then let the POVRay box render while I did other things. No sense waiting and tying up my main box for a rendering application. Just my $.02

                  Hi Edson,

I've finally got around to running Parallels 3 with Leopard 10.5. I find it better than BootCamp and much more convenient. I think Parallels V3 is a definite improvement over version 2 on the graphics front.

                    glenn,
i have not yet started trying out KT. i am running windows on mac to run an app from yahoo to manage my website.

parallels at US80 is much cheaper than buying a PC, don't you think?

                    regards.

i tried parallels for 15 days and was quite happy with it so i bought a license. however, since my use of bootcamp was limited to a couple of apps i could not find much difference between it and parallels.

on the other hand, we are trying out vmware fusion and it seems a really good way alternative to run win on mac.

                      thanks.
